Kratom Dose: How Much Kratom to Take

Kratom, or mitragyna speciosa, refers to the leaves from an evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia. Related to the coffee plant, kratom has stimulant, pain-relieving, and mood-boosting effects that have been used for centuries in traditional medicine practices across the world. Whenever you start taking kratom, you might wonder how much kratom to take for a proper kratom dose. However, the answer is, well, it depends.

What does your perfect kratom dose depend on? A few things — including your body composition, your kratom tolerance, and the intention you have for taking kratom.

Finding the Right Dose

Lots of things have recommended serving sizes or doses — Advil, vitamins, even Cheetos — not kratom. Because kratom is not a prescription medication from your doctor, there is no prescribed dose to take. Kratom is not a one-size-fits-all type of product. Some folks might find they need only a little bit, while others might need a hefty dose for their purposes. There will definitely be some trial and error before you find the right fit for you.

Write it Down

Our recommendation — start small. If you have never tried kratom powder before, it’s always best to start at the beginning. In fact, we actually recommend keeping detailed notes about your kratom use whenever you start; keeping a notebook or notes in your phone will help you track how much kratom powder you’re taking and how that dose affects you. Too small of a dose may not have hardly any effects, while too large of a dose could cause you some stomach upset or nausea.

Be Patient

So what is considered a small dose of kratom? A gram or two of kratom powder is a great place to start for a beginner. At this dose, you could not feel enough of kratom’s effects, or not feel them whatsoever. Alternatively, at this dose, you could find that kratom is giving you all of the effects you were looking for. Whatever the case — write down when you took your beginning dose of kratom, exactly how much you took, and the specifics of how it made you feel — and wait. If you were on team ‘I-don’t-even-feel-it,’ wait at least a couple of hours before deciding to take more (and write that down, too!). If the initial dose did it for you, be sure to pay attention to how long that dose lasted, and jot it down in your notes.

From here, you’ll be able to know exactly how kratom doses affect you, how long they last, and you can incrementally increase the dosage until you find that sweet spot you’re looking for.

Kratom Doses for Different Effects

As mentioned above, there are several effects that a person taking kratom powder might be looking for. As such, there is sort of a baseline for how much kratom you might take to lead to the desired result. When taking kratom, you might be looking to simply boost your mood and energy levels in the mornings, or you could take kratom to help fight pain and insomnia at night, or, you might be taking kratom to help relieve the withdrawal symptoms from kicking opiates (congrats, by the way!!).

Generally, smaller doses of kratom powder can act as a stimulant and can be comparable to a morning coffee, giving you a jolt of energy and improving your overall mood. As the dose increases, generally so do the pain-relieving qualities. In higher doses, kratom can act as a sedative — perfect for those who have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep through the night.

Not Just the Dose Matters — Kratom Colors

The strain and color of kratom powder you’re taking matters, too! And you should absolutely note what type of kratom you’re taking in your handy-dandy-kratom-notebook along with your times, dose sizes, and effect details. Kratom comes in different ‘colors,’ mainly red, white, and green. These different color types are said to have unique properties and provide different effects to their users. Generally, green kratom is known to be the mildest form with mood-boosting properties. White vein kratom is said to offer energy and focus, and red vein kratom is more sedative and pain-relieving. But, again, these effects will all vary based on how your body processes kratom and the amount and timing of your kratom dose.

Kratom Dose: How Much Kratom to Take — A Final Word

Kratom has been in use for centuries for the simple reason that it works. However, it works differently based on all kinds of factors — including your body composition, your kratom tolerance, and the amount and type of kratom that you take.
