But there’s just not that much info about what kratom ~feels~ like.

In this blog, we’ll be reviewing some kratom basics. Then, we’ll answer the question of what does kratom feel like? with the help of some kratom users themselves.

What Is Kratom?

Before we get into the details, let’s take a little kratom refresher. Kratom, or mitragyna speciosa, is an evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia. This coffee tree relative can grow at heights up to 80 feet tall. Traditionally, the leaves of the kratom tree were used in traditional medicine practices across Southeast Asia. Additionally, it was common for field workers to use kratom to fight off pain and fatigue throughout their days.

Today, kratom is used by millions of Americans. While kratom itself hasn’t changed from its natural, organic state, production has ramped up significantly in the last century. Now, it’s not only Southeast Asian laborers who can reap the benefits of kratom. People all across the west now have access to kratom. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, 61% of those users in the U.S. are women, and 91% of users use kratom to treat pain.

Kratom Benefits

Kratom has a myriad of benefits. Some of these are well-studied and understood, and some of them are based in user experiences as science catches up.

The pain-relieving properties of kratom are well-studied. Kratom works to relieve pain by working similarly to an opiate — but let’s be clear, kratom is not an opiate. However, it does interact with the same receptors in your brain as an opiate, but in a different way. Kratom relieves pain by interacting with these receptors and interrupting your brain’s perception of pain.

Because of how kratom works in your brain in relation to opioids, it is helpful with cases of opiate withdrawal. Kratom can work to ease these intense symptoms as your body detoxes from the dangerous substances. Kratom is preferable to opiates because of one main reason: respiratory depression. Opioids cause OIRD (Opioid-induced respiratory depression) as a symptom of opioid overdose, and it can often lead to death. Kratom use does not recruit the substance in your brain that is the root cause of respiratory depression.
