What Is a Tincture of CBD Oil?

Ah, the world of cannabis… and its multitudes of methods available to enjoy everybody’s favorite herb. If you’ve spotted little dropper bottles of tincture at your local Mr. Nice Guys and wondered about their contents, then you’re in the right place. We’re answering your questions about what is a tincture? and further, what is a tincture of CBD oil, how you use it, and why tinctures might be right for you.

What Is a Tincture of CBD Oil?

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, a tincture is a medicine made by dissolving a drug in alcohol. Specifically, cannabis tinctures are liquid cannabis-infused products, usually sold in small glass vials with eye-dropper dispenser lids for ease of dose calculations. These liquid tinctures can be taken directly under the tongue or mixed with food and drink, offering an easy-to-use option for smokeless cannabis use.

How Are Tinctures Made?

So, tinctures are alcohol-based extracts. These can be made at home, but what about the ones on the shelves? How are those made? “Commercial CBD tinctures are usually created using either an alcohol or CO2 extraction method. The hemp flowers are soaked in alcohol, vinegar, glycerine, or CO2 to extract the CBD from them. Using CO2 creates a highly purified CBD isolate that is then infused into a carrier base, often an oil.”

Tincture vs Oil

However, this means that many commercially available products labeled as ‘tinctures’ are in fact oils. Though they do not meet the standard definition of a medicine made by dissolving a drug in alcohol, the ‘tincture’ label is often used to define highly-concentrated extracts that are sold in dropper bottles and made for taking directly. This also distinguishes these oil ‘tinctures’ from other types of oil products meant for different uses.

What’s the Difference Between CBD and THC Tinctures?

Per the 2018 farm bill, CBD products on US markets must be under 0.3% THC to be legal for sale. Because of this, most CBD tinctures are made from industrial hemp. Hemp generally has lower traces of THC, and high levels of CBD. Conversely, THC tinctures available in legal states are generally made with full-strength cannabis plants to extract the most THC possible and create a potent extract.

Are There Other Types of Tinctures?

There are endless types of medicinal tinctures on the market. As far as the cannabis industry goes, there are still further products than just CBD and THC tinctures. As new cannabinoid distillates and isolates hit the market, they will inevitably end up in tinctures; though many of them will be the tincture oils. Currently, Mr. Nice Guys carries 1,000mg Twisted Delta-8 tinctures made from Delta-8 distillate.
